Casino Bonus Terms Explained

Last updated: May 2026·6 min read

Casino bonuses can be genuinely valuable — or a frustrating trap. The difference is in the terms. This guide explains everything you need to know to evaluate a bonus before accepting it.

What is a wagering requirement?

A wagering requirement (also called a playthrough requirement) is the number of times you must bet the bonus amount — and sometimes your deposit too — before any winnings become withdrawable.

Practical example:

• You deposit ZAR 100 and receive ZAR 100 bonus

• Wagering requirement is 30× on the bonus

• You must bet ZAR 100 × 30 = ZAR 3,000 on eligible games

• Only then are the winnings generated by the bonus available for withdrawal

Reasonable wagering: 10×–25×

Industry standard: 25×–40×

Avoid: above 45×

Wagering on bonus only vs. deposit + bonus

This distinction is crucial:

• Wagering on bonus only: you bet only the bonus amount (more common and more favourable)

• Wagering on deposit + bonus: you bet the combined total — potentially twice the effort

Some operators calculate wagering on deposit + bonus. Always check which base is used in the full terms before accepting any offer.

Bonus expiry

Every bonus has an expiry — the time you have to meet the wagering requirement before the bonus is cancelled.

• 7 days: short; requires daily play

• 14–30 days: reasonable for most players

• No expiry or extended expiry: preferable

If the bonus expires before you complete the wagering requirement, both the bonus and any winnings generated by it are forfeited.

Game contributions to wagering

Not all games count equally towards your wagering requirement:

• Slots: typically 100% contribution — every R1 wagered counts in full

• Live poker, blackjack, roulette: typically 10%–20% contribution — a R100 blackjack bet counts only R10–20 towards wagering

• Excluded games: live betting and certain specialty games may contribute 0%

If you prefer table games or sports betting, verify whether those games count before accepting any bonus.

Maximum withdrawal cap

Many bonuses cap the amount you can withdraw from bonus-generated winnings:

• Example: ZAR 200 bonus with 5× max cashout = maximum ZAR 1,000 withdrawable

• Winnings above that cap are forfeited when you request a withdrawal

Bonuses without a withdrawal cap are rare but do exist — look for "max cashout: unlimited" in the terms.

Bonus types and what to expect

• Welcome bonus: highest value, highest wagering; read terms carefully

• Free spins: each spin has a fixed win value; typically low max cashout

• Reload bonus: lower value but usually fairer wagering

• Cashback: percentage returned on losses; typically no wagering or very low (1×–5×)

• No-deposit bonus: rarely worthwhile — very high wagering (40×–60×) and minimal cashout caps

How to compare bonuses intelligently

Simple formula:

Real bonus value = Bonus amount ÷ Wagering requirement

Example:

• Bonus A: ZAR 500 at 40× wagering → real value: ZAR 12.50

• Bonus B: ZAR 200 at 10× wagering → real value: ZAR 20.00

Bonus B is better despite its lower face value. Always calculate before you decide.
